Johann Van Deventer
Born and raised in the heart of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa, Johann Van Deventer is a master craftsman whose journey into knife making began in 2005. By 2007, Johann had become a member of the prestigious Knife Makers’ Guild of Southern Africa, a testament to his skill and dedication to the craft.
Working from a one-man shop, Johann builds most of his own machines and has evolved from specializing in fixed blades to crafting some of the finest liner locks, flippers, assisted openers, and automatic knives. The thrill of perfecting a high-quality folder drives Johann’s passion, and today he only creates fixed blades by special request. His expertise earned him IKBS accreditation in 2013.
Inspired by nature, Johann incorporates a variety of materials into his designs, from wood, bones, and horns to more exotic elements like mammoth ivory and molar teeth. His blades are crafted from premium materials like Damascus, RWL34, M390, and Takefu, while the handles are finished with rare substances like titanium, carbon fiber, and Westinghouse micarta, elevating each piece into a sought-after work of art.
Johann regularly attends major knife shows, including the National Guild show (RSA), International Blade Show (Atlanta, USA), and NYCKS (NY). His talent has been recognized with multiple awards, including numerous first prizes for Best Working Folder and Best Art Folder at the Bloemfontein Knife Show, among other accolades.
Though knife making is his full-time pursuit since 2013, Johann is also a talented musician, playing violin, lead guitar, bass, and double bass for various bands, including ARCO Musica. His love for music and craftsmanship intertwines, as both offer him ways to share something meaningful.
Johann’s relentless pursuit of excellence is best summed up by his own philosophy: “I am what I repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Join us in celebrating Johann Van Deventer, a true artisan whose knives reflect his passion, precision, and extraordinary attention to detail.
